What is detox?
Detox or
detoxification is a process that can come in different forms and it
may refer to various different programs that are meant to cleanse
the body from unwanted substances and toxins. Nowadays, the environment
is quite toxic, thus the air and even the food we eat is full of chemicals
that are toxic to our system. Our body needs a form of detoxification
everyday in order to be healthy and function appropriately. It is
well known that the basic detox begins from our diet. Naturist doctors
prescribe a lot of detox programs, which
are based on ingredients meant to fortify the liver, lungs, kidneys,
bowels and blood. All these organs are involved in the eliminating
of chemicals and toxins from the body. For instance, the liver functions
as a filter for the removal of unwanted substances from the blood,
while the kidneys function as a filter for the wastes from the blood
into urine. The human body uses natural substances (food, herbs amd
phytochemicals) in order to maintain a healthy balance. Any other
substances function as stimuli to our system and destroy the normal
balance.
Detox diets
There are a lot of detox programs, which differ in what action and intent are concerned. Some programs concentrate on detoxifying the bowels, while others cleanse the liver, lungs or the blood. There are also some detox programs that work in order to help the skin in its functions. The combination of all these programs into a total health program will effectively restore your health to an excellent level. When the body is able to eliminate toxins all its energy and vigour are revitalised. It is very important to note that there are other factors to be considered too during the detoxification process, such as nutrition, water, exercise, rest, fresh air and even sunshine. Special detox diets are a very important element in the detoxification process because they aid the body to eliminate toxins in several ways. Vegetarian diets, for example, contain all the fibre that the body needs in order to produce excellent bowel elimination. These diets also provide the body with vitamins that nourish all the eliminative organs, especially the bowels and the liver. Therefore, vegetarian diets are cleansing diets and aid the body in elimination of toxins. Diets are considered to be the basis of any detox program no matter what the program is, and they usually exclude the so called trigger foods that cause indigestion or elimination problems.
The Herxheimer Reaction
One very important thing that people should be aware of is that during the detox process there occurs a reaction, called the Herxheimer Reaction, which manifests itself by nausea, headaches and vomiting. The Herxhemer reaction takes place because the body is eliminating toxins faster than it was previously used. This can turn out to be quite a severe reaction and even though it lasts only for a few days it can deter the individual from achieving his/her goal. It is very important to note that this is a normal reaction and not a sign of regression, as some may believe once experiencing it. If the Herxhemer reaction is too strong, one is recommended to back a little off from the program and continue it at a slower pace. Each body can react differently during the detox process that is why one should not consider a more serious reaction as a sign of health weakness. Every person trying to detoxify should pay attention to all the signs their body is giving so that they can adapt to its needs. Proceeding too fast with the detox can have bad results when the toxins are back in circulation. The body should be previously prepared for eliminating toxins before they are actually released, by keeping all the eliminating organs functioning in good condition.
Detox is essential for human life. The body must release the toxins on a daily basis otherwise it would die.
