Detox centers

A detox center is usually a drug rehabilitation center where people get medical and psychotherapeutic treatment for addiction to psychoactive substances like: alcohol, drugs or even nicotine. The main purpose of such detox centers is to determine the patient to cease abusing these substances. The substance abuse can have drastic consequences on many levels, such as psychological, legal, social and also physical. Detox centers use a lot of plans and programs, which have as a main goal teaching the patient to re-adjust to living in a drug/alcohol free society. Patients will be kept away from any relation to their noxious environment. They are even advised to keep a distance from family members or friends who are believed to be still using the addictive substance. There are a lot of programs, but the most popular ones are the 12-step ones, which encourage patients to eliminate the alcohol/drug abuse from their lives and also to change the habits that are believed to have influenced the individual to become addicted. The idea that the detox centers' staff is trying to induce to their patients is that complete abstention is a must and that attempts to moderate the abuse are only going to keep the addiction alive.

Detox centers provide various types of programs including residential treatment (the patient has to be hospitalized), out patient treatment, local group support treatment, and extended care treatment. There are also some detox centers that are called “sober houses”, which are designed especially for those people suffering from alcohol abuse. Some detox centers are also part of the criminal justice system, thus those who commit minor drug offenses are usually sent to such a detox center instead of prison. It is very well known that the complete detoxification takes months or even years. The main purpose of a detox center is to provide specialized care and supervision to the patients during the first hours or days of abstinence. This period is quite critical because this is when the withdrawal stage occurs. This is the stage when the body reaches the peak of craving and which is manifested through nausea, vomiting, all types of pain, lack of memory and so on and so forth. Detox center fees are very different from place to place, but you will surely find one to fit your pocket. There are also free detox center programs that are financed by the government or non profit organizations.

"There are a lot of aspects to alcoholism detox and drug rehab. One of the most important ones is the medical aspect. The professional medical help is a must in the alcoholism detox process. A doctor should be assisting the patient throughout the entire detox treatment. It has been proven that if the patient trusts himself in the hands of a professional the whole treatment goes much more smoothly."
